There are many words that describe how we are to be in the world, determined, dedicated, warrior-like, easy-going, laid back, sensitive, caring you get my drift! My word is help, helpful, helping…
For me, it turns out I have the need to give back to the world. Helping. Being helpful to my family and friends always leaves a nice feeling that I have done something good. Something that makes someone smile.
Firstly, I helped out with a local American Football Team doing simple things like organising meetings and taking the minutes then typing them up led to the ‘office’ jobs of my future I am sure!
What giving back gives you
Yesterday I was driving back from meeting with a local men’s group, (probably the most inspiring volunteer group I have encountered), and I thought about the possibilities for this year, realising that giving my time and help for free is the most rewarding job I can have.
I know my skills as a coach can be accessed by many who are in real need of support. Even just those needing a boost or uplifting conversation makes me feel alive and inspired and motivated to help as a volunteer.
A few years ago I helped re-ignite a local church youth group, called to get involved with the community in some way. We held space for lots of kids to feel free and safe and happy.
After that, I helped out at my daughter’s (then) primary school one day a week. Something that I really enjoyed and gave me such an insight into that world. Seeing the stress the teachers were under inspired a workshop on stress management!
All of these things led me to meet new people and make some exceptional friends. Giving my time and skills (sometimes just a listening ear) made me feel humble. Always in the right place at the right time doing the right thing!
My latest journey has already begun! It is one I am very excited about! Good mental health, taking self-care seriously and support for people has been a consistent theme in my coaching career. Being able to put all my skills and knowledge towards a local group aimed at bringing back a sense of community support, kindness and love is a dream.
Meeting a couple of people yesterday has given me just the boost I need. Now to clear my foggy brain and dig into my resources to start helping again!
