Why you should be meal planning every weekend.

Prep Like a Boss!Have you heard this one from the diet guru's recently?

Its one of those catch phrases you'll either love or hate isn't it?

The thing is the concept behind that phrase is totally spot on even though its a bit of a tacky tagline. So what does it mean to 'prep like a boss'?

Firstly have you ever said or thought the following?

  • I don't have time to cook from scratch everyday!
  • I work full time I can't cook tasty healthy meals when I get in from work!
  • I have to juggle work and family, it's easier to just buy prepackaged food.
  • I want to lose weight but I don't have time to prepare fresh food.

I used to think I never had the time to cook tasty, fresh, healthy meals either. But then I started to learn about how preparing ahead can actually save you time in the week. Not only that but it meant I could sit down and relax with a cup of tea and not get stressed about cooking! Or I could finish writing a blog or new content and not get behind with my work schedules.

The concept is really simple, spend a few hours one day a week making up batches of food ready to store in the fridge or freezer so you can grab and go without having to put too much effort in.
Why would you give up precious weekend time to stand in the kitchen cooking?
  • Well to put it simply so you can save time and effort in the week and ensure you are getting really good home cooked food without the hassle.
  • You'll feel more inclined to cook during the day on a Saturday or Sunday (or any day off from work) rather than when you get home from work in the evening.
  • You will free up evening space to be with the family, relax in front of the TV, read a book.
  • You will avoid snacking on all the stuff you want to avoid.
  • You'll save money from avoiding takeaways.
  • You'll create guilt free healthy meals every week.
  • You'll know in advance what you are going to eat that week and avoid the midweek angst of 'there's nothing to eat in the house.

This is how I manage to get the most out of my days and know I will be cooking really tasty, fresh food every day. It took a while but once i got into the habit its a simple process and one that leaves me feeling satisfied knowing I have loads of free time to do with as I please!

Making it part of your lifestyle is a sure fire way of getting into a great habit, and one your friends will be wanting the secret for!

So here's a few tips on planning ahead:

  • Think about the food you love to eat, chose things you will like - it makes it easier than cooking things you have never heard of.
  • Consult your fave recipe books.
  • Plan out Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for the week
  • Write your shopping list and either order a delivery or go early on the day you have designated to cook.

For the Preparation:

  • Wash your fruit and veg and dry off
  • Chop up any Salad items for salads and side dishes and store in sealed containers in the fridge.
  • Roast up any veggies you might want to use in dishes during the week and store in containers in the fridge.
  • Cook up main meals and store in containers in the fridge or freezer.
  • Prepare any breakfast dishes ahead like overnight oats for the fridge.
  • When it comes to serving, pick a meal add in some extra veggie side dishes and enjoy!

Most recipe's can be fully or partly made up ahead of time, you just needs to re heat them and add in sides like sweet potato wedges, or rice with extra vegetables.

Overnight oats are a brilliant and simple way to grab a breakfast if you are pushed for time in a morning. And a tub of leftover roast veg and rice is a simple yet nutritious lunch.
